Laurel Creek with a dog: what the rules say
Laurel Creek Conservation Area is run by the Grand River Conservation Authority, not the City, and its dog rules are strict. Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than two metres and must be under control at all times. They must stay on marked trails, are not allowed on the beach or in the swimming area, and must never chase wildlife. Owners must pick up after their dog, and the Authority issues fines for off-leash dogs. We found no off-leash area at Laurel Creek, so if you have heard that the creek is a place to let a dog run, the Authority's own pages say otherwise. The City of Waterloo also notes that popular trails such as Hydrocut and those in Laurel Creek are not maintained by the City, and asks owners to keep dogs on a leash on any trail.
Where to let a dog off leash on the west side
Waterloo has two permanent leash-free parks: Bechtel Park on the east side and a park at 265 Copper Street on the west side. The Copper Street park opened in October 2025. It covers about seven thousand square metres in one large fully fenced area, with seating, a waste unit, limited parking and one accessible spot, and is open from sunrise to sunset. The City described it as a welcome amenity for Waterloo's west side as the number of dog owners grows.
There is also a temporary fenced leash-free area in Waterloo Park West, near the Westmount Road entrance, that opened in September 2025 and is meant to stay until a permanent core-area park is built. Park status changes, so check the City's pages for current details before you head out. We do not claim a distance from Laurelwood to either park, because the City's pages do not give one.
All dogs over twelve weeks old living in Waterloo must be licensed, and a licence runs for twelve months from the day you register. The full picture for three cities is on our dog licence and leash rules page.
What the trails do to a coat
Laurel Creek is forest and water, which means two things for a coat: wet-then-dry days that tangle curls, and a tick risk. Region of Waterloo Public Health says to take precautions in wooded and bushy areas and tall grass, to check pets that spend time outdoors, and that ticks can ride a pet indoors. Public Health does not accept ticks for testing, so if you find one, talk to your vet.
A curly coat that spends weekends in the creek area is the case our doodle guide was written for, and a thick coat that sheds in handfuls after those same weekends is the case for the double-coat guide.
