Doon, Doon South and Huron Park
Doon is a former village that is now part of Kitchener. It sits where Schneider Creek meets the Grand River, Highway 401 runs along its east side, and Homer Watson Boulevard runs through it. The Homer Watson House and Gallery, the former home of the painter, is here, and so are Doon Heritage Village and the Waterloo Region Museum at its entrance. Conestoga College's Doon campus sits near the Highway 401 and Homer Watson Boulevard interchange.
Doon South is one of the newer parts of Kitchener. Real-estate guides say most of its housing went up after 2000, and Huron Park is usually described as a separate community. We treat that as an estimate, so this page does not promise a parking arrangement for any street. If your street has no driveway, tell us at booking where the van can stop within a short walk of your door.
Walks around Doon, and what they do to a coat
Doon's walks run along water and through woods. Homer Watson Park has asphalt, gravel and single-track loops, and some of its trails connect to the Grand River corridor. The City's trail page also lists the Walter Bean Grand River Trail along the river and the Laurentian Trail, which links Fischer Hallman Road to Homer Watson Boulevard. Huron Natural Area is a large forest and wetland park with looping dirt and gravel trails past ponds, and dogs must be on a leash there.
River mud, pond water and burrs from the single-track paths are what tangle a coat between grooms. A bath and brush is often enough after a muddy week, while a thick coat that has been through the same trails for a season usually needs the deshedding visit described in our double-coat guide. A dog whose coat has already knotted up is covered in matted coat help.
Ticks are worth a look after any of these walks. Region of Waterloo Public Health says to take precautions in wooded or bushy areas and tall grass, and that a tick can ride your dog indoors. The Region's page names no specific local risk spots, so we do not either. If you find one on your dog, speak to your vet.
Leash and off-leash rules near Doon
The City of Kitchener says dogs are welcome at any of its parks and trails but must stay on leash outside designated off-leash areas. It lists five off-leash parks: George Lippert, Idlewood, Kiwanis, McLennan and The Aud neighbourhood dog park. None of the City's descriptions places one inside Doon, so find the nearest on the City's map at kitchener.ca/dogparks and do not rely on us for distances.
The off-leash park rules are worth reading before a first visit. A responsible person at least 16 must be with each dog, an owner can bring no more than two dogs at once, dogs need a municipal licence and current rabies vaccination with tags worn, and puppies under 12 weeks old, dogs in heat and sick dogs are not allowed. Children under six are not allowed in the off-leash area. Kiwanis Park and George Lippert Park have no maintained winter parking lots. The full set of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge rules is on our dog licence and leash rules page.
