This is the page that tells you when a salon is the better choice, because trust matters more to us than one booking. It compares the two on time, stress, price and dogs, using our exact prices and what a few other groomers in the region published when we read their sites on 10 October 2026. Salon figures here are estimates unless a line says otherwise.

Where these comparisons come from

The salon column describes what a small number of groomer websites and price lists in Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph showed when we read them on 10 October 2026. On the sites we read, most listed a starting price and set the final one after they saw the coat. Some publish a weight limit. We have not surveyed every groomer in the region. We call these estimates because prices change, a page we read may be out of date, and a salon's real bill depends on your dog. Check any groomer's current price before you decide, ours included.

What the extra cost buys

The price difference pays for a groomer who comes to you. You get one dog in a van at a time, with the exact price on screen for your dog's size and coat before you commit. As an example of what exact means, here are three dogs and the price for each. Every number is read from the live price list.

The minimum visit charge is $130 per visit, before 13% HST, so a single small dog with a short coat is where the gap to a salon is widest. A second dog at the same address on the same visit is 10% off, and members of the Groom Club pay a lower price at every visit.

Time, and what it is worth

A salon visit has four parts: the drive there, the groom, the wait and the drive back. A van visit has one, and it happens at your address. If a trip costs you a morning, a mid-day slot from your front door may be the real saving, and so is the working hour you do not lose. If you pass the salon on your way to work, the saving shrinks.

Dogs that find salons hard

Dogs that fear other dogs, loud dryers or being kept in a crate often do better with a quiet one-to-one groom. We do not promise it for every dog. Tell us at booking about fear, biting or health problems, and a flat behaviour handling charge of $25 applies where a dog needs a slower, two-handed approach. You see it in your price from the start.

When a salon is the better choice

• A small, calm dog on a tight budget. A salon visit is often cheaper, and the van's minimum charge can be more than a short-coat dog needs.
• A dog you can drop off and forget. If you are happy with a drop-off and your dog is too, you give up nothing.
• A groom you want on a street we do not serve yet. Check your postal code, because we do not claim to cover every address.
• A groomer you already trust. A good relationship with a groomer is worth keeping.

Five questions to ask any groomer

1. Do you show an exact price before I book, or a starting price?
2. Is the price the same if my dog's coat is matted, and who approves the extra?
3. Is my dog alone while being groomed, and is it ever in a cage?
4. What size and weight of dog do you take?
5. What happens if my dog becomes too stressed to finish?
